There used to be just the Egyptian cotton sheets to ensure the best bed linens in our homes. In the recent trends for home improvement, however, organic bamboo sheets are starting to gain popularity, especially to those who are seriously considering maintaining eco-friendly and allergy free households.

What are they made of?

The original Egyptian cotton was a product of a plant called "Maho", more scientifically known as Gossypium barbadense. Cloths and linens produced from this cotton plant became very popular in Europe. In most recent times, however, production of Egyptian cotton is mostly using Gossypium hirsutum more commonly known as upland cotton. This cotton specie is widely found in the United States, abundantly in Mexico. Thus, it is also called Mexican cotton. An Egyptian cotton made from Mexican cotton? This is somewhat confusing. Well yes, that can be true. But be assured that both species of cotton can produce real high quality linens that give us our desired amount of comfort in our moments of rest and slumber. Manufacturers have probably opted to use the Egyptian cotton mark since, for centuries now, it has been established to be the best when it comes to linen products.

Bamboo sheets are of course made out of the bamboo grass plant. Just for a tiny bit of information for those who do not know, yes bamboo is a kind of grass and is not a tree. There had been debates if the fiber produced out of bamboo can still be considered as organic in nature since its production requires the use of manufacturing chemicals. Although this may be true when bamboo fiber is still being introduced in the market, the present industry of this material has already found means to make the end product as organic as it can be.

Why go for Egyptian cotton?

Typically, Egyptian cotton sheets would have higher thread counts as compared to bamboo sheets. When it comes to cloths and linens, the higher the thread count the more durable the sheets become. Not only that, the high thread count is what makes Egyptian cotton much softer, giving it that luxurious feel on your sheets. For newly purchased linens, you may notice the cotton not to be so soft. Though constant washing however, you will find out that the material gets softer and softer. Linens of this type are also priced lower as compared to bamboo sheets.

Why go for bamboo sheets?

Bamboo sheets are still comfortably soft although it is with lesser thread counts than that of Egyptian cotton. And since this is organic, this is a fabric that is known for being hypoallergenic and is preferred by those suffering from asthma and other lung related problems. It is also found to be resistant from bacteria build-up which eliminates bed mites or dust mites. With bamboo having natural thermal regulating capabilities, bamboo sheets can be comfortably warm during cold weather and also give enough coolness during the hot season.

So ultimately, it is your choice whether to use organic bamboo sheets or those made from Egyptian cotton.
